Introduction to Acting

Length of Class: 10 Classes / 2 Hours each Class 
                             Additional scene rehearsal outside of class will be required

Class Description: An introduction to acting, this course will emphasize developing the student's
interpersonal communications, expression, introducing the student to the fundamentals of acting
and making the student more informed of the skills utilized in performance. The course will also
introduce the student to the fundamental rehearsal process culminating in the performance of
scripted scenes and monologues.
 
The first half of class will be devoted to ensemble building and freeing the actor through acting
and improvisational exercises. Students are guided through technique application through scene
work. Class will culminate with a presentation of scripted scenes to family and friends.

Course Objectives:
• To develop the student's observational skills towards life, its experiences, artistic sensibility in
   preparation to becoming a theater practioner or informed audience member.

• To introduce the student to the basic imaginative, physical, and vocal skills necessary for acting.

• To develop in the student a beginning rehearsal approach to scripted scenes.

sgannon1Originally from Oklahoma, Scotty Gannon began performing professionally in high school
after attending the prestigious and competitive Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute. It was then
he was named All State Actor and went on to receive his BFA in Drama with the assistance
of acting scholarships. While working as a Sales Manager, Mr. Gannon worked with a
foundation teaching acting, singing, movement, audition along with nutrition and fitness
to students interested in pursuing performing arts as a career.

In 2006 Scotty was invited to join the Graduate Acting Ensemble at the University of Georgia
where he received his MFA in Drama Performance. Soon after he began teaching at Suwanee
Performing Arts Academy (now a full-fledged community arts center) while working as a
professional actor in Atlanta theater and film. During this time, his summers were spent
traveling the nation directing university student leaders to create theatrical orientation programs
with issues ranging from homesickness and time management to depression and suicide prevention.

He has been a resident of Athens since 2011. His residence is also home to a Pug, Schnauzer, Hound, and Boxer. When
not fostering a successful career in real estate, Scotty works mainly in commercials, music videos (he performed in
Shaky by Thayer Sarrano which was named Flagpole’s video of the year), and workshop productions of plays before they
hit the NYC stage.

Learn to Play Bagpipes – Beginner Class 

Instructor: Dan Wilson

Dates: August 29 - December 12, 2016

Day / Time: Mondays, 6pm - 7pm

Length of Class: 16 Classes / 1 Hr each Class

Class Fee: OCAF Members - $35
                   Non-Members - $40

Class Description: This class is designed for teaching the basics of playing the bagpipes.
Students will need to bring a Dunbar regular size, plastic practice chanter with a Walsh reed
and the bagpipe tutor by Seumas Macneil, commonly known as the “green book” to the first
class.  This will cost about $100.  The instructor will be more than glad to provide contacts for
suppliers for these supplies. DO NOT BUY BAGPIPES AT THIS TIME!  The practice chanter
is all that is needed to learn the various finger movements and tunes for playing the bagpipes.

to read music and are working on embellishments and basic tunes on the practice chanter.

Class Description: This class is for students that have completed the Beginning Class and
Intermediate Class A. Students know how to read music, have a knowledge of the embellishments,
are proficient with the basic tunes on the practive chanter, and are ready to play the bagpipes.

Dan Wilson started playing bagpipes with the “D”
Company Buffalo City Guard Gordon Highlanders in
Buffalo, New York.  He played with the Virginia
Highlands Pipes and Drums in Roanoke, Virginia and
was Pipe Major of the Abingdon Highlanders Pipes and
Drums, a Grade V competition band in Abingdon, Virginia. 
He played five years with the North Atlanta Pipes and
Drums, a Grade V competition band that has placed first
in several highland game competitions including a first
place finish at the Stone Mountain Highland Games this
past fall.  Dan played the small pipes in the play
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, with the Athens
Town & Gown Players and plays the bagpipes for special
events in and around Athens.  Dan is Pipe Major of the
Thistle and Kudzu Pipes and Drums.
