Class Description: If you have ever wondered if you would enjoy the art of pottery this is the class for you! Wheel throwing & Handbuilding are many times viewed as completely separate methods of working in clay. However, they are many time used together to create even the simplest pieces. Think handles on mugs! Handbuilding also allows a potter to alter wheel thrown pieces &/or create shapes & items that are not suitable for the wheel.

Wheel throwing instruction will focus on the fundamental skills such as wedging, centering, shaping, pulling, and trimming used to create basic forms such as cylinders, bowls, mugs and vases. Handbuilding will cover basic pinch, slab, & coil construction skills including scoring/slipping, rolling slabs, extruding shapes & using slump molds. These skills will enable students to make such items as tiles, simple sculptures, butter dishes & more. Basic glazing & decorative methods will also be covered.

The class is designed for those with no prior experience, or for those who are ready for a refresher.
